About Te Pukenga - New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology

New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), formerly known as Te Pūkenga, was established in April 2020 as a single national network bringing together 16 institutes of technology and polytechnics and nine industry training organisations. Its creation was an outcome of vocational education reforms carried out between 2018 and 2023, which aimed to consolidate previously separate regional institutions into one unified, nationally governed structure.

The organisation is now in a process of disestablishment. The Government's policy is to return vocational education to regionally autonomous institutions and industry-owned on-job training. On 1 January 2026, ten polytechnic business divisions and all work-based learning organisations exited NZIST to become standalone entities. Four remaining business divisions — NorthTec, Tai Poutini Polytechnic, the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki, and Whitireia & WelTec — are scheduled to exit NZIST on 1 January 2027, at which point the organisation is expected to cease operating as a legal entity.
