About Hillary Outdoors Education Centres

Hillary Outdoors was founded in 1972 by Sir Graeme Dingle, then aged 25, under the original name OPC. Sir Edmund Hillary became patron of the organisation in 1973 and held that role until his death in 2008. His grandson, Alexander Hillary, now serves as a patron, and Sir Graeme Dingle remains both founder and patron.

The organisation operates across three programme areas: a schools programme, a tertiary programme serving the outdoor learning and adventure tourism sector, and corporate training and development. Hillary Outdoors runs centres at Tongariro and the Coromandel, and is an accredited outdoor provider for The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award, offering Bronze, Silver, and Gold Adventurous Journey intensives as well as Gold Residential Projects at both centres.
