About Institute of Professional Legal Studies
The Institute of Professional Legal Studies (IPLS) is a New Zealand organisation that delivers practical legal training to law graduates preparing to enter professional practice. It describes itself as the first organisation in Aotearoa to develop a skills-based approach to this training, developed alongside the legal industry.
IPLS offers the Professional Legal Studies Course, which is required for admission to the legal profession. The course is structured around practical, workplace-applicable skills rather than academic legal theory, and is designed in consultation with employer law firms.
The organisation frames its culture around a set of Māori principles — Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, Mōhiotanga, Māramatanga, Tuākana/Tēina, and Kaitiakitanga — and states a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles. Instructors are drawn from the legal profession and are described as having an active role in mentoring future lawyers.
A 2021 NZQA External Evaluation and Review report noted that the course achieves close to 100 per cent completion rates and that its content and delivery are tailored to the needs of law graduates and employer law firms.
