About Media Design School Limited
Media Design School at Strayer (MDS) is a private tertiary provider based in New Zealand, founded in 1998 to train graduates in digital design and creative technology. In its 2022 External Evaluation and Review, NZQA rated MDS as a Category 1 provider — the highest rating available under that system — with an "Excellent" rating across all six key educational performance indicators. NZQA discontinued the EER categorisation system in 2026; MDS continues to reference its 2022 rating for transparency.
MDS is the only New Zealand school to have partnered with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's PlayStation First Academic Development Programme, which gives students the opportunity to develop games for the PlayStation platform.
The school operates Satellite Learning Centres in two locations outside its main campus — the NGEN Room in Whangarei, Northland, and The Cause Collective in Wiri, Auckland — developed in partnership with local organisations to extend access to students outside the main campus area.
MDS's Learner Success Plan 2024 sets out targeted strategies to support Māori and Pasifika learners and to work toward parity in learner outcomes. A separate Tāngata Māori + Pacific Peoples Matawhānui vision document, established in 2020, provides a framework across three pillars covering cultural connectedness of the institution, its learners, and its staff.
