About NZ School of Food & Wine

The New Zealand School of Food and Wine was founded by Celia Hay and opened its first campus in Christchurch in 1995. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, the school relocated to Auckland, where it is currently based.

Hay remains the school's founder and director. She is a qualified chef, holds the WSET (London) Diploma of Wine, and completed a Master of Education (Distinction) and MBA at the University of Canterbury. She is founding chair-president of the New Zealand Sommeliers and Wine Professionals Association.

The school offers New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) programmes and short courses in food and beverage. Hay's book The New Zealand Wine Guide serves as the set text for the school's NZQA-approved Certificate in New Zealand Wine Micro-Credential.

Fee credits for prior study

Students enrolling in the wine programmes who have already completed certain qualifications may receive a credit against course fees. Eligible qualifications include the Certificate in New Zealand Wine Micro-Credential, Certificate in New Zealand Wine Advanced Micro-Credential, WSET Level 2 Award in Wines, WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits, and WSET Level 3 Award in Wines. Credits are available for study completed at NZSFW or with other providers, with the maximum credit capped at NZ$2,500. Where a credit is granted, the student does not repeat the classes for that qualification.

Students enrolling in the Certificate in Food and Beverage — Barista, Wine and Spirits who have completed the Certificate in Barista and Service Skills Micro-Credential or the Certificate in Spirits, Cocktails and Bartending Micro-Credential at NZSFW may receive a credit of NZ$400 per micro-credential, up to a maximum of NZ$800.

International Students

NZ School of Food & Wine (NZSFW) distinguishes between two categories of international applicant. Students enrolling in courses of 12 weeks or more follow a formal multi-step enrolment procedure, while those applying for short courses of less than 12 weeks — such as Barista or WSET part-time — enrol directly through the school's online system and may do so on any visa type.

Enrolment procedure for longer courses

The international enrolment process runs in five steps:

  • Submission of an enrolment form with supporting documents, including a passport copy, CV, verified English language results, and any prior study certificates
  • A pre-enrolment interview (in person, online, or by telephone), for which a non-refundable NZ$200 application fee is charged
  • A conditional offer of place issued by email if the application is successful
  • Full payment of course fees into a Public Trust account before a student visa application can be made
  • An unconditional offer of place letter, issued after payment is confirmed, for submission to Immigration New Zealand

Students using an education agent must ensure the agent is approved by NZSFW before applying.

English language requirements

All NZQA courses require a minimum of IELTS 5.5 (academic), with the certificate dated within two years of the New Zealand visa application. Other accepted assessments include Pearson, TOEFL, University of Cambridge, and NZCEL.
