About VisionWest Community Trust

Visionwest Waka Whakakitenga — previously known as VisionWest Community Trust — originated in the early 1980s from a group of Glen Eden Baptist Church members who established a drop-in Friendship Centre at the disused Glen Eden railway station, rented for one dollar a year. In its first year the Trust supported 100 people; it now supports over 11,000 individuals across West Auckland and Aotearoa New Zealand, with a team of more than 1,600 staff and volunteers.

The Trust delivers services including navigational support, community housing, youth development, food support, counselling, financial mentoring, community healthcare, trauma-informed care, and early childhood education. Its stated point of difference is a wrap-around service philosophy that integrates these supports around the whole person.

The Trust operates with an explicit commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which it describes as a living covenant guiding its work. This commitment has shaped the inclusion of Māori executive leadership, kaupapa Māori services, and a structure it calls Te Tauihu o te Waka Whakakitenga — a form of shared leadership intended to reflect the spirit and intent of Te Tiriti. The Trust maintains an ongoing relationship with Glen Eden Baptist Church, which it identifies as the origin of its whakapapa and faith-led foundations.
