About Ashburton College
Ashburton College is a state secondary school located in Ashburton, New Zealand. It was established in January 1965 through the merger of two existing schools: Ashburton High School and Ashburton Technical College (previously known as Hakatere College). The merger followed the direction set by the Thomas Report of 1944, which emphasised broad general education and effectively ended the role of dedicated Technical High Schools in New Zealand.
The name "Ashburton College" was chosen as a compromise that preserved a connection to both predecessor schools. The school's crest features a Phoenix, chosen to represent the emergence of the new school from the two former ones, and the Latin motto Resurgamus — meaning "to rise again" — reflects the same idea.
For its first seven years, the school operated across two separate sites before consolidating onto its current site. The foundation stone was unveiled by Prime Minister Holyoake on 1 August 1969, and the junior school moved to the current site in May 1971, with senior students following in June 1972. The school flag, incorporating the school colours of red and blue, was designed in 1973 by a student, Neroli Lemon.
A whole-school outdoor assembly area known as the chessboard has been used as the main gathering space since the school's early years on the current site, and this remains a continuing tradition.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
With an Equity Index of 467, Ashburton College is in the range eligible to opt into the Ministry's donations scheme — receiving additional government funding per student in exchange for not seeking donations (except for overnight camps).
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Ashburton College actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Ashburton College's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 897 students (65.8%)
- Asian — 260 students (19.1%)
- Pacific — 208 students (15.3%)
- Māori — 215 students (15.8%)
- MELAA — 23 students (1.7%)
- Other — 11 students (0.8%)

Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Enrolment
Ashburton College operates a Ministry of Education Enrolment Scheme. All students living within the school's home zone are eligible to enrol. Out-of-zone enrolments are considered provided the total roll does not exceed 1,280 students; if applications exceed that threshold, they are prioritised according to a defined order of criteria.
Domestic students enrol online. The enrolment process for prospective Year 9 students follows a set sequence of dates, including an Open Evening on Monday 8 June 2026 (4:00pm–6:00pm), with online enrolments or manual enrolment cards due by Wednesday 10 June. Enrolment interviews are scheduled across several dates between June and August. A Year 8 induction day is held on Tuesday 24 November (9:00am–1:00pm).
International students apply through a separate process. The international enrolment procedure requires submission of an online application form accompanied by a copy of the applicant's passport, a recent photo, and the latest school report. Once assessed, the school issues an invoice and an Offer of Place. Students intending to study for three months or longer require a student visa, for which both the Offer of Place and proof of tuition payment are needed. Students from visa waiver countries studying for fewer than three months must obtain an NZeTA.
