About Flaxmere Primary School

Te Kura o Pāharakeke, Flaxmere Primary School is a full primary school located west of Hastings, serving students in Years 1 to 8 with a roll of 450 children. It was the first primary school to open in Flaxmere, established in 1971.

The school has a strongly bicultural and multicultural character. Over two thirds of students identify as Māori, and 23 percent are of Pacific heritage, including Sāmoan, Cook Island Māori, Tongan, Kiribati, and Tuvalu communities, alongside children from the Philippines, Nigeria, Korea, Australia, and European backgrounds.

Families and whānau can choose from four learning pathways:

  • Rumaki — Māori immersion
  • Reorua — Māori bilingual
  • Auraki — English medium
  • Vasega ole Gagana Sāmoa — Sāmoan language pathway, opened in 2022

The Reorua bilingual pathway was established before 1994, the Rumaki immersion class began in 2004 and expanded to Years 7 and 8 in 2018 with three classes.

The school frames its student outcomes around a TOA Matrix — three expectations expressed as Kia Toa (Be Your Best), Kia Ora (Be Well), and Kia Ako (Be a Learner) — which are linked to graduate profiles for each learning pathway.
