About Millers Flat School

Millers Flat School is a small rural primary school located near the Clutha River in Central Otago, New Zealand. It opened on 18 June 1886 with 40 students. The surrounding area's economy at that time centred on farming and gold dredging from the Clutha River. Enrolment grew to 180 students by 1924, following the construction of a railway to Roxburgh. The current school buildings, on the same site, date from 1968.

The school is not faith-based or Māori-medium. Its character is defined by four values, framed around the image of a local blue bridge over the Clutha River and collectively described as "The Bridge to the Future":

  • Solve Problems (Whakaoti rapaka)
  • Take Risks (Waewae kai kapua)
  • Achieve (Whaia te iti kahuraki)
  • Respect Others (Whakaute)

The school has two classroom groups: the Moa Room (Years 0–3) and the Tui Room (Years 4–8). Year 7 and 8 students attend Technology at Roxburgh Area School on Thursday afternoons. A playgroup, open to all, runs on Tuesday mornings in the Falcon Room.

School donations

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
