About Sherwood School (Hawkes Bay)
Sherwood School opened on 8 May 1963 as an amalgamation of Makaretu and Ashley Clinton schools, serving the Ashley Clinton–Makaretu district of Central Hawke's Bay. It is a co-educational, full primary state school catering to students in Years 1–8, with a roll that is approximately 70% New Zealand European and 30% Māori.
The school is located three kilometres along Makaretu Road, at the base of the Ruahine Ranges. Students recognise Tiraha (the highest point of the Ruahine Ranges) as their maunga and the Tukipo stream as their awa. The school currently operates two classes: Room 2 for Years 1–3 and Room 1 for Years 4–8.
Sherwood School holds Enviroschool status. A student-led Enviro group plans and implements sustainability actions at the school. A related practical programme involves a shadehouse — built in 2012 with support from Genesis and extended in 2013 and 2017 — which propagates native plants for the nearby A'Deane's Bush reserve. The school grows 300–400 trees per year for Bel Group through a partnership established in 2017. Students visit A'Deane's Bush twice a term as a learning context.
The school's stated vision is "Passion for Learning in a Rural Environment", reflecting its rural setting and the country values it describes as central to its character.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
With an Equity Index of 460, Sherwood School (Hawkes Bay) is in the range eligible to opt into the Ministry's donations scheme — receiving additional government funding per student in exchange for not seeking donations (except for overnight camps).
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Sherwood School (Hawkes Bay) actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Sherwood School (Hawkes Bay)'s own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 23 students (82.1%)
- Asian — 3 students (10.7%)
- Pacific — 1 students (3.6%)
- Māori — 5 students (17.9%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.
