About St Brigids School (Tainui)

St Brigid's School is a state-integrated Catholic primary school in Tainui, Dunedin. As a state-integrated school, its staffing and operational costs are funded by the state, while ownership and governance through the Board of Trustees rests with the Catholic Bishop of Dunedin.

The school was established in January 1939, when the Sisters of Mercy were invited to staff it. The original building served as both a classroom during the week and a church on weekends, requiring furniture to be rearranged each Friday and Monday. In 1970, the Sisters of St Joseph (the Brown Josephites) took over as teachers.

St Brigid's is part of Mercy Parish - Whanau Aroha in South Dunedin and identifies as a Mercy School. Its three core values — Respect (Te Tapu o Te Tangata), Care (Atawhaitia), and Responsibility (Whakahaere) — are drawn from Mercy values and are reflected in weekly assembly awards and the school's house points system. The school's stated vision is: We care, we learn, we grow with Jesus.

Enrolment

St Brigid's School (Tainui) is a state integrated Catholic school. Prospective families begin the enrolment process by making an appointment with the Parish Priest to receive a preference form, which determines whether a child qualifies for preference or open (non-preference) enrolment. Families are also invited to contact the school office to arrange a visit with the Principal.

Preference enrolment

A child qualifies for preference enrolment on any of the following grounds:

  • The child has been baptised, or is being prepared for baptism, in the Catholic Church.
  • The child's parents or guardians have already had one or more siblings baptised in the Catholic faith.
  • At least one parent or guardian is Catholic and, although the child has not yet been baptised, participation in the school may lead to baptism.
  • A grandparent or other significant adult (such as an aunt, uncle, or godparent) undertakes, with parental agreement, to support the child's formation in the Catholic faith.
  • One or both non-Catholic parents or guardians is preparing to become Catholic.

Non-preference (open) enrolment

St Brigid's holds a maximum of seven open enrolment places. Non-preference applicants must accept that they are enrolling in a school of Special Character and that their place is conditional on participation in the school's programme. Payment of Attendance Dues, as set by the Proprietor, is also required and is not voluntary.

Priority for non-preference places is given in the following order:

  • Siblings of non-preference students currently enrolled
  • Siblings of former non-preference students
  • Children of current staff or Board members
  • Non-preference students transferring from another integrated school with the same special character
  • Children living within one kilometre of St Brigid's who wish to participate in the special character programme

Non-preference applicants who cannot be enrolled immediately may be placed on a waiting list, ordered by date and number, and contacted if a place becomes available.
