About Taradale School
Taradale School (known formally as Taradale Primary School) is a New Zealand primary school (kura). The school's stated mission centres on students embracing their identity and culture, realising their potential, and contributing to their community.
The school is not faith-based or Māori-medium. Its character is shaped by three core values, each expressed in both English and te reo Māori:
- Respect / Whakaute — for self, others, and the environment
- Responsibility / Kaitiakitanga — for choices, actions, and learning
- Relationships / Whanaungatanga — built on kindness, collaboration, and care
The school publishes a Strategic Plan and Annual Plan in accordance with the Education and Training Act 2020, which requires all New Zealand schools to develop and make these documents available. The current planning cycle covers 2024–2026.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".
With an Equity Index of 407, Taradale School is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Taradale School actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Taradale School's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 329 students (76.2%)
- Asian — 87 students (20.1%)
- Pacific — 1 students (0.2%)
- Māori — 58 students (13.4%)
- MELAA — 18 students (4.2%)
- Other — 2 students (0.5%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Enrolment
Taradale Primary School operates under a Ministry of Education enrolment scheme with a recommended roll of 450 students. The scheme is intended to prevent overcrowding and ensure enrolment applications are managed fairly.
Home zone enrolments
Students living within the school's designated home zone are entitled to enrol. The enrolment form must be submitted with proof of residence, which the school accepts in the following forms:
- Recent power account
- Current rental agreement
- Sale and purchase documentation
Out-of-zone enrolments
Where places are available, the Board may hold a ballot for a limited number of out-of-zone places in selected year groups. The number of available places is determined annually by the Board. If applications within a priority group exceed available places, a ballot is held. Families are notified of ballot dates through local community or daily newspapers.
Out-of-zone applications are processed in the following order of priority:
- Sibling of a current student
- Sibling of a former student
- Child of a former student
- Child of an employee or Board member
- All other applicants
Applicants claiming sibling priority must provide proof of the sibling relationship.
