About Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College
Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College is a state secondary school located in central Christchurch, adjacent to Hagley Park. It was founded in 1858 by Charles Fraser, a minister of St Andrews Church, originally on the corner of Antigua Street and Hagley Avenue. A later merger with the Technical College led to the establishment of Hagley High School.
In 2015, the Ministry of Education granted the school Designated Character status under Section 156 of the Education Act, recognising that it offers programmes and courses not available in conventional secondary school settings. This status reflects the school's role as a regional hub across Christchurch, serving both adolescent and adult learners, including those who are disengaged from learning or returning to education after a break.
Several features distinguish the school from most New Zealand secondary schools:
- No uniform requirement
- Students address teachers by their first names
- Entry is not restricted to Year 9 — students can join at the level appropriate to their needs
- The school operates between 8:30am and 8:30pm, with evening classes available through the After 3 programme
- Both full-time and part-time enrolment are available
Enrolment requires meeting designated character criteria, including a commitment to the college's stated values of trust, respect, integrity, and personal responsibility, and the identification of a suitable programme of learning.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
With an Equity Index of 468, Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College is in the range eligible to opt into the Ministry's donations scheme — receiving additional government funding per student in exchange for not seeking donations (except for overnight camps).
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Te Puna Wai o Waipapa - Hagley College actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
