About TIPENE
TIPENE is a kura (school) in Aotearoa New Zealand that focuses on the education of Māori and Pasifika boys. Its approach is grounded in kaupapa Māori, with tikanga, whanaungatanga, and connection to te ao Māori, whakapapa, and identity forming a central part of school life.
The school describes itself as having reopened, marking a new chapter in its history. Its stated focus areas include pathways to tertiary study and vocational training, high-performance sport and the creative arts, and a pastoral care model oriented toward the wellbeing of the whole person.
TIPENE operates with an explicit equity focus, aiming to serve rangatahi whose potential it considers underrecognised in mainstream education. The school's stated intent is to prepare young men to engage in both te ao Māori and the wider world, with reference to contribution to whānau, hapū, and iwi.

No enrolment scheme listedNo enrolment scheme is currently listed for TIPENE in the available Ministry of Education data. Check the current Ministry of Education information or contact the school for the latest enrolment arrangements.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where TIPENE actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against TIPENE's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 16 students (23.5%)
- Asian — 1 students (1.5%)
- Pacific — 8 students (11.8%)
- Māori — 65 students (95.6%)
- MELAA — 1 students (1.5%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Curriculum
Junior Programme
The Junior programme uses a thematic, integrated approach in which literacy, writing, and mathematics are framed around four named themes: Mana Tangata, Rangatiratanga, Kaitiakitanga, and Te Ao Marama. Mornings focus on Literacy and Numeracy, with students grouped in workshops. Te Reo Māori is compulsory for all students. The following subjects are taught in separate classes or dedicated sessions:
- Te Reo Māori
- Art
- Health
- Science (practical sessions each term, led by senior Science staff)
- Kapa Haka
- Food Technology
- Music (individualised lessons)
Each student has an individual Google site where work is uploaded for whānau to view, alongside individual IPPs linked to Literacy and Numeracy skill progressions.
Senior Programme
The senior curriculum is delivered within a Māori cultural context, with the philosophy of Te Whare Tapa Whā integrated throughout. Nutrition, athletic pathways, competition, and service are described as components of the programme alongside academic study. Competency in Te Reo Māori and Mātauranga Māori is provided through both academic and tikanga-related opportunities.
Senior students are assessed through NCEA, with Levels 1 to 3 offered across Years 11 to 13. Assessment uses a combination of internal and external standards; students can achieve NCEA with Merit or NCEA with Excellence. The school encourages students to maintain a broad subject range across these years.
