About Waikato Waldorf School ( Rudolf Steiner)

Waikato Waldorf School is a state-integrated Waldorf (Steiner) school located in the north-east of Hamilton (Kirikiriroa). It offers education from early childhood through to Year 13, following the Steiner/Waldorf educational philosophy developed by Rudolf Steiner.

The school was established in 1996, growing out of a Steiner kindergarten founded in Hamilton in 1982 by Olive Hay. It opened with nine students and gained integrated status with the Ministry of Education two years later. A founding principle of the school is that no child should be denied access to Waldorf education on financial grounds; the school has operated on a donation model — accepting contributions of money or time — since its inception.

The school expanded incrementally over the following decades. A high school component began with Class 8 in 2013, and by 2025 the school offered Classes 10 through 12. The New Zealand Steiner Certificate of Secondary Education (NZCSE), recognised by New Zealand universities and internationally, was established in 2023. The school now provides a continuous Waldorf education from birth to age 18, spanning a play circle, kindergartens, a lower school, and a high school.

Waikato Waldorf School is a member of Steiner Education Aotearoa New Zealand, the umbrella organisation for Steiner/Waldorf schools and early childhood centres in New Zealand, and of the Steiner Waldorf Ka Hui Ako. It also participates in the Te Pae Here Te Raki Raawhiti O Kirikiriroa Kāhui Ako, a collaborative network of 21 schools focused on raising student achievement. High school students aged 14 and older can participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award programme.
