About Manukau Institute of Technology
Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) is a provider of technical, vocational and professional tertiary education based in South Auckland. It was founded in 1970 and has operated for more than fifty years. As of its 2021 Annual Report, MIT enrolled approximately 11,000 students per year, offering qualifications from certificate to degree level. Its campuses are located in Ōtara, Auckland CBD, TechPark, and Manukau City Centre.
MIT states a particular obligation to serve the communities, people and employers of South Auckland, with improved tertiary outcomes in that region a stated institutional priority.
MIT and Unitec have merged into a single combined provider, with the legal name Manukau Institute of Technology and Unitec. The two institutions continue to operate under their separate names in some contexts, including when marketing to prospective students. The combined organisation serves around 20,000 students per year across five campuses in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland. A full transition to a single independent entity is planned from 1 January 2026, overseen by the Tāmaki Transition Group.
Campuses
Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) operates across four campuses in Auckland.
- MIT Ōtara — located at 53 Ōtara Road, Ōtara, established in 1970. The campus is home to Ngā Kete Wānanga, a marae and Pasifika centre. Subjects taught here include baking, culinary and hospitality, education, floristry, hairdressing, Pacific languages and Te Reo Māori, police preparation, social work, sport, and supported learning. Some facilities, including a training salon, restaurant, café, and bakery, are open to the public.
- MIT Manukau — located at the corner of Manukau Station Road and Davies Avenue, Manukau. Manukau train station is situated within the campus, with a bus interchange adjacent. Subjects taught here include business administration, business and management, digital technologies, health and counselling, nursing, and logistics.
- MIT TechPark — a purpose-built facility that brings all of MIT's trades and engineering schools under one roof. Subjects taught here include automotive technologies, building, carpentry and construction, electrical trades, mechanical engineering trades, plumbing, gasfitting and drainlaying, professional engineering, and refrigeration and air conditioning.
- MIT City Campus — located on Auckland city's waterfront and home to the New Zealand Maritime School, which has a history of nearly 100 years. Maritime programmes previously taught at MIT Mahurangi relocated to this campus in January 2026.

Scholarships and Financial Assistance
The following named funding sources are listed in MIT's Funding, Scholarships and Grants Handbook for students enrolled in full-time programmes.
- MIT Student Financial Assistance — for currently enrolled MIT students who can demonstrate financial hardship. Value is variable and assessed on an ongoing basis.
