About Unitec

Unitec is a vocational education and training institution based in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland. It operates under the legal name Manukau Institute of Technology and Unitec, trading as Unitec, formed when Unitec and Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) merged their operations. The combined institution serves approximately 20,000 students each year across five campuses in the Auckland region.

As an independent provider, Unitec can develop its own qualifications in response to regional community and industry needs. Its stated focus is on on-campus vocational training, with additional delivery in workplace and online settings.

Unitec's relationship with Māori is formalised through Te Noho Kotahitanga, a document grounded in the Treaty of Waitangi that sets out five principles guiding the institution: Rangatiratanga (Authority and Responsibility), Wakaritenga (Legitimacy), Kaitiakitanga (Guardianship), Mahi Kotahitanga (Co-operation), and Ngākau Māhaki (Respect). Under these principles, Unitec accepts that Māori hold authority over teaching and learning relating to Māori dimensions of knowledge.

A Pacific Centre operates on campus to support Pasifika students, and includes a fale tele hand-built by a tufuga (master builder).

International Students

Unitec offers International Study Grants to eligible international students enrolling in Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor, or Master's programmes. Grants apply to students who are new to Unitec or progressing to a higher-level qualification within the institution. For 2027, grant amounts range from $500 to $4,000 NZD, depending on the programme, and cover the first year of full-time study. Each applicant may receive one grant per programme.

Unitec works with over 200 authorised agents globally to assist prospective international students with enrolment.

Career and Employability Support

Unitec's Career and Employability Team provides support to current students, prospective students, and graduates. The team offers career planning, course selection advice, and assistance with finding work.

Students and graduates can book one-on-one appointments with Career Consultants and access a range of workshops and events. Employability resources cover career planning, CV and cover letter writing, and job search skills.

The team also lists current job opportunities, including graduate roles, internships, part-time and full-time work, and volunteering opportunities. On-campus work opportunities are available for students while studying.

Unitec holds industry connection events, including an Industry Connect event at which students are matched with employers, and a Business and IT Industry Connect Event for students in those fields.
