About Downie Stewart Foundation

The Downie Stewart Foundation is a charitable trust based in Dunedin, New Zealand. It operates Moana House, a residential therapeutic community established in 1984 for tāne (men) with a connection to the criminal justice system.

The programme was founded at the prompting of Mike Martin, who had personal experience of the court system, and JD Murray, a District Court judge in Dunedin at the time. It was loosely modelled on the Delancey Street Programme in San Francisco. Claire Aitken has served as Programme Director since 1987.

Moana House operates from a suburban house and can accommodate up to 19 residents at a time. It has a strong bicultural focus and works with men who present with multiple difficulties, including substance abuse, involvement in violence, and poor employment and goal-setting skills. The foundation trades under the name Downie Stewart Foundation t/a Moana House.
