About IPU New Zealand

IPU New Zealand is a private tertiary institution located in Palmerston North. It was established in 1990 under the name International Pacific College (IPC), a name it held until 2015. The institution was founded as part of a broader scheme to create a consortium of campuses across Pacific-Rim nations, with credits transferable between campuses and degrees obtainable at any campus in the network.

The institution is linked to a second campus in Okayama Prefecture, Japan — International Pacific University — which opened in 2007. The two campuses exchange students and faculty, reflecting the original intent of the founding consortium model.

Students from approximately two dozen countries study at the Palmerston North campus. Postgraduate programmes were added in 2000. The institution has cooperative links with tertiary institutions and secondary schools throughout Asia.

Student Services Fee (SSF)

The SSF is a compulsory levy charged by all New Zealand tertiary institutions, governed by rules set by the New Zealand Tertiary Education Commission. Domestic students may borrow the amount against their student loan. The SSF funds services including careers support, clubs and societies, counselling, health services, employment information, financial advice, media, and sports and recreation activities. Any surplus is carried forward and used solely for student services in subsequent years.

IPU New Zealand consults with students annually before setting the following year's SSF, covering the fee amount, services offered, contracted providers, and expenditure authorisation.

Accommodation

On-campus accommodation is provided in private rooms of approximately 7 square metres. The weekly fee covers three meals per day (seven days a week) in the Dining Hall, use of the Common Room and kitchen, laundry, car and bike parking, and on-site security. The weekly rate from January 2026 is $307.50 (from January 2025 it was $300 per week). A $500 bond, a $250 maintenance fee, and the first week's rent are payable in advance. All rooms are subject to availability; students cannot reserve a specific hall or room.
