About MAST Academy

MAST Academy is a New Zealand training provider specialising in the marine, composites, and specialised technology industries. It arranges workplace-based training, coordinates on- and off-job delivery, and assesses learners in partnership with employers.

The organisation traces its origins to the Boating Industry Training Organisation (BITO), which was established to serve the specific needs of the boatbuilding sector after apprentices had previously trained under the Unitec umbrella. BITO expanded its scope to include the composites industry in 2011 and began operating as the New Zealand Marine and Composites Industry Training Organisation (NZMAC ITO).

When the government's Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE) disestablished Industry Training Organisations on 1 April 2020, NZMAC ITO transitioned out of the ITO structure, eventually operating as MAST Academy. Prior to that reform, NZMAC ITO had been granted special dispensation to continue as a standalone organisation rather than being absorbed into a larger ITO, on the basis of its specialised market.

MAST Academy offers pathways for school leavers, people already working in a trade, and those new to the industries it covers. Programmes include a Launch it – School to Work programme connecting senior students with workplace experience, and a Learning to Lead course aimed at current or emerging workplace leaders. Marine trades courses are also offered, with upcoming intakes scheduled for September 2026 and February 2027.
