About New Zealand Tertiary College

New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) is a private training establishment founded in 1982 to provide education for early childhood teachers. It was established in response to a recognised gap in formal qualifications for those working in early childhood centres. In 1984 it became the first private training institution in New Zealand to offer a formal early childhood education programme following government approval, and adopted its current name in 1997.

The college has since expanded beyond its original focus. In 2017 it added health and wellbeing programmes, and in 2026 launched the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary). It currently delivers 10 early childhood education programmes, 3 health and wellbeing programmes, and 1 secondary teaching programme. All qualifications are approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). More than 11,000 students have graduated from the college.

NZTC delivers programmes both within New Zealand and internationally. Its qualifications are recognised by bodies in several countries, including the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority, the Chinese Ministry of Education, the Malaysian Qualifications Agency and the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education, the University Grants Commission – Sri Lanka, and the German higher education database Anabin.

The college publishes He Kupu (The Word), an early childhood education e-journal with a stated global readership of more than 11,400. It is also noted as the first private ECE training provider in New Zealand to offer specialist early childhood education postgraduate programmes.
