About Playcentre Education

Te Whānau Tupu Ngātahi o Aotearoa – Playcentre Aotearoa is a network of early childhood education centres across New Zealand serving families with children aged 0–6 years. Each centre is cooperatively managed by parents, with regional and national support provided by Playcentre Aotearoa staff.

A defining feature of the Playcentre model is that parents participate directly in sessions alongside their children rather than leaving children in the care of professional staff. Sessions run for 2½ to 4 hours, with adult-to-child ratios of between 1:3 and 1:5. The programme emphasises child-led, play-based learning.

Parents who take on governance and operational roles within their centre can formalise that experience through an NZQA-accredited education programme for adults, delivered within the Playcentre setting. Each centre offers three free visits to prospective families.

Playcentre Aotearoa is governed by a Trustee Board whose members are drawn from the parent community, with trustees holding backgrounds in areas including education, governance, and Māori language revitalisation.
