About Trinity Methodist Theological College

Trinity Methodist Theological College is an NZQA-registered private tertiary institution in Auckland offering theological education within a Methodist framework. It is governed by the Trinity College Council, which was established as its governing body by the Methodist Conference in 2008.

The college traces its origins to the Wesleyan Native Institution, opened in Grafton, Auckland in 1845 to train Māori students as teachers and ministers. Theological education subsequently moved through several locations before returning to Grafton in 1929. Since the early 1970s, Trinity has operated in partnership with the Anglican college St John's in Meadowbank, an ecumenical arrangement that exposes students to a wider range of religious traditions. The college also participated in the University of Auckland's School of Theology from the 1990s and 2000s to strengthen its academic programme.

The college's stated educational aims include preparing people for both lay and ordained ministry, relating formal theological disciplines to ministry practice, and addressing the needs of the Methodist Church of New Zealand. Its curriculum draws on Māori and Oceanic cultural and knowledge traditions alongside biblical and theological scholarship.

The current Principal is Rev Prof Nāsili Vaka'uta, who has held the role since 2015. The college is a signatory to The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021.
