About Aurora College
Aurora College (Te Mūranga a Rangi) is a co-educational, Year 7 to 13 state school located at 234 Regent St, Heidelberg, Invercargill. It opened in 2005, established as a result of the Invercargill Network Review, which led to the closure of several schools in the South Invercargill area. Aurora College was formed to provide secondary education to students in that community.
The school's Māori name was gifted by the Waihopai Runaka of Ngai Tahu, based at Murihiku Marae. Te Mūranga a Rangi translates broadly as "Firelight in the Sky" but also carries connotations of fierceness and intensity, referencing Rangi, the Māori God of the Sky.
Aurora College serves a defined local catchment and states it does not seek to grow into a large school, instead aiming to remain a smaller school in which individual students are known. Its three stated values are Perseverance, Whanaungatanga, and Citizenship, and its school proverb is "It's not just the stars that shine."
The school describes itself as one of five secondary schools in Invercargill, drawing on the Southern Cross constellation as a symbol — positioning Aurora College as the fifth and smallest star in that grouping, located in South Invercargill.

Service Academy
Aurora College operates a Service Academy, a military-style programme primarily at NCEA Levels 2 and 3. Entry is by interview, with priority given to Year 12 and 13 students. The programme includes training with the Youth Life Skills Cell of the NZ Army — covering activities such as induction at Burnham Military Camp, bush craft and survival skills, and the South Island Services Academies Coast to Coast Challenge — alongside literacy, numeracy, vocational pathway study, Gateway workplace experience, and community and school service components. All students in the programme have an Individual Learning Plan and are supported toward NCEA Level 2. There are no fees for training events within the programme.
