About Gladstone School (Masterton)

Gladstone School is a primary school located in Masterton. It operates across three syndicates: Kourarau (Years 1–3), Ruamahanga (Years 4–6), and Ōnoke (Years 7–8). Teacher-to-student ratios are 1:20 in Kourarau and 1:23 in Ruamahanga and Ōnoke. Teacher aide support is funded across each syndicate by the Friends of Gladstone School (FoGS) Committee and the Board of Trustees.

The school organises students into four multi-level whānau groups, each named after a former local school that merged with Gladstone at some point in its history. Siblings and, where possible, first cousins are placed in the same group, and students remain in that group for their entire time at the school. Year 8 students serve as group leaders.

The four whānau groups and their associated colours are:

  • Te Kopi — Yellow
  • Te Wharau — Red
  • Maungaraki — Blue
  • Longbush — Green

The school holds Enviroschool status and incorporates environmental learning through classroom programmes and student-led action projects. Other curriculum areas include the arts (choir, Kapa Haka, visual arts, productions, and languages), Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC), sports programmes delivered by external facilitators, and e-learning.

School donations

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".

With an Equity Index of 417, Gladstone School (Masterton) is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.

Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.

Student ethnicity

The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Gladstone School (Masterton)'s own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.

  • Pacific — 3 students (1.6%)
  • Māori — 46 students (24.7%)

Enrolment

Gladstone School operates an enrolment home zone scheme. All students living within the home zone are entitled to enrol. The zone covers a broad rural area centred on Gladstone, extending from the intersection of Homewood and Kaiwhata Road to the coast, south along the coastline, and west through a defined network of rural roads including Hinakura Road, Ponatahi Road, Kokotau Road, Woodlands Road, Te Whiti Road, Cavelands Road, Te Kopi Road, and Tupurupuru–Te Wharau Road, among others. Proof of residence within the zone may be required at enrolment.

The school uses cohort entry for new entrants (Year 1). Rather than starting on their fifth birthday, children begin school in groups at one of two points per term — the first day of term or the mid-term date — and must have turned five before starting. Parents may choose to delay their child's start until the beginning of a later term or until age six.

Children born before 31 March are classified as Year 1; those born from 1 April onwards are classified as Year 0 and become Year 1 students the following year.

Parents are asked to contact the Principal before the intended enrolment date to arrange enrolment information and a visit to the junior syndicate. Pre-enrolment visits are encouraged prior to the formal enrolment day.

The 2026 cohort entry dates are as follows:
