About Haumoana School

Haumoana School is a state primary school located in coastal Hawke's Bay, between the townships of Te Awanga and Haumoana, near Cape Kidnappers and the Tukituki River. The school was founded in 1921, celebrating its centenary in 2021.

The school operates without a zone, drawing pupils from a wide geographical area. Its roll typically sits between 150 and 200 pupils, taught by 12 full-time and part-time teachers alongside 6 support staff. Approximately 20–25% of students identify as Māori.

The school's stated vision is "Learning to Fly", with three core values:

  • Whanaungatanga — being welcoming and inclusive, treating the school community as family
  • Respect — care for self, others, and the environment
  • Resilience — persisting through challenges

The school holds Enviroschool status and maintains vegetable gardens and a small orchard on its grounds, which also include a bike track and two swimming pools. Outdoor and experiential learning are part of the school's stated philosophy.

School donations

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".

With an Equity Index of 421, Haumoana School is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.

Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.

Equity Index

The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Haumoana School actually sits, not just the number on its own.

Student ethnicity

The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Haumoana School's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.

  • European — 145 students (91.2%)
  • Asian — 6 students (3.8%)
  • Pacific — 1 students (0.6%)
  • Māori — 36 students (22.6%)
  • MELAA — 5 students (3.1%)

Enrolment

Haumoana School operates without an enrolment zone, meaning there is no ballot or waiting list for entry. The school accepts enrolments from families across the Hastings and Napier area and beyond.

Children may start school from their fifth birthday and must be enrolled before the age of six. The school also accepts enrolments from children who begin after turning five.

To enrol, parents must submit a completed enrolment form and provide a birth certificate as proof of date of birth. The birth certificate is used for the Ministry of Education's ENROL database and as a record for the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Enrolment forms are available from the school office.

For children approaching school age, the school offers pre-start visit mornings arranged by the New Entrant teacher. These visits typically take place a few weeks before a child's start date, run from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, and can be repeated as many times as the child needs — most children attend one or two. Parents are welcome to stay during visits.
