About Knights Stream School- Mingimingi Hautoa

Knights Stream School | Mingimingi Hautoa is a full primary school located at 1 Killarney Avenue, Halswell, Christchurch. It opened in February 2019.

The school's Māori name, Mingimingi Hautoa, was gifted by Te Taumutu Rūnanga, the hapū representing the local area and part of Ngāi Tahu, the iwi holding manawhenua over much of Te Waipounamu. Te Taumutu Rūnanga is recognised as the kaitiaki (guardian) of the school. The name translates as "The Courageous Mingimingi", referring to Coprosma propinqua, a shrub of cultural and ecological significance to Māori, used historically in the making of hinaki tuna (eel nets) and regarded as a taonga species.

The school's cultural narrative is grounded in the local landscape. The site sits within an area that was traditionally kūkūwai (wetlands), and the school's pepeha references the maunga Ōtūmatua, the awa Ōpouira (Knights Stream), and the wetlands of Kūkūwai. Ōtūmatua is considered a wāhi tapu by Ngāi Tahu. The nearby waterways were historically significant mahinga kai sites and part of a waka haulage route.

The school states four values: Caring, Connected, Courageous, and Creative, alongside Curious.

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".

Enrolment

Knights Stream School operates within a defined enrolment zone. All students living within the home zone are entitled to enrol. The school's Board has confirmed that no out-of-zone placements are accepted.

Enrolment applications are completed online. The process involves three steps:

  • Submit the provisional enrolment form online
  • Email all additional documentation to office@knightsstream.school.nz, using the child's name as a reference (required documents are listed on the enrolment form)
  • Once all documentation is received, the Office Manager contacts the family to complete enrolment

The school uses a cohort entry system for new entrants, meaning children start school in groups rather than individually on their fifth birthday. There are two entry points per term — one on the first day of each term and one at a mid-term point. Children must have turned five before starting. Those who begin in Term 1 or at the start of Term 2 are classified as Year 1 students for that year; those starting from the mid-point of Term 2 onward are classified as Year 0.

Transition visits take place on Tuesdays, and a parent information session is held during the first transition visit.
