About Mission Heights Junior College

Mission Heights Junior College is a New Zealand secondary school operating under the vision statement Kia Mana Ake – Growing Greatness. Its learning management system is called Mission Heights Online.

The school is structured around four whānau groups, described as schools within a school, which form the basis of its pastoral and community organisation.

The school uses an Innovative Learning Environment model, in which students and teachers work collaboratively. Personalised learning is a stated feature of the curriculum approach.

Enrolment

Enrolment scheme on record

Mission Heights Junior College has an enrolment scheme (a home zone) on record. Living inside it guarantees a place; living outside it does not, though out-of-zone applications may still be considered.

School donations

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".

With an Equity Index of 407, Mission Heights Junior College is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.

Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.

Student Support and Pastoral Care

Mission Heights Junior College organises its pastoral care around four Whānau groups — self-contained learning communities, each of approximately 200 students and 12 staff, led by two senior leaders. Students are assigned to a Whānau on entry and generally remain in that community throughout their time at the school.

  • Whānau groups — four groups named Coast (Takutai), Forest (Ngahere), Water (Wai), and Mountains (Maunga). Each operates as a physically independent community responsible for collaborative teaching, close monitoring and tracking of individual students, and participation in school activities and events.
  • Whānau Deans — each Whānau has a designated Dean (Ms. Adora Lindsay for Coast/Takutai, Mr. Ezra Bartlett for Forest/Ngahere, Mr. Roger Whatman for Water/Wai, and Mr. Douglas Choong for Mountains/Maunga).
  • Dedicated Administrative Assistants — each Whānau has an Administrative Assistant whose primary focus is the tracking and follow-up of daily attendance within that Whānau.
  • Attendance management — unexplained absences are followed up first by telephone contact with parents or guardians, with an email notification issued if direct contact cannot be made.
