Curriculum

Botany Downs Secondary College delivers its curriculum across a 25-period weekly timetable, with five one-hour periods each day from Monday to Friday. The curriculum is structured around the eight learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum, with Key Competencies and Values integrated throughout.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is embedded across all subject areas and is also offered as a specialist Digital Technology course from Years 11 to 13, with a focus on design and programming.

NCEA Levels 1 to 3 are offered, combining internal assessments and external examinations. All NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship examination sessions run for three hours, starting at either 9:30 am or 2:00 pm. New Zealand Scholarship examinations are also available.

Year 11 students can work toward the school's own BDSC Year 11 Diploma, which recognises achievement across NCEA and school-based assessments. The diploma is awarded at three levels — BDSC Diploma, BDSC Diploma with Distinction, and BDSC Diploma with High Distinction — based on a 12-point scale, with a minimum average of 4 required to qualify. Eligibility also requires a 90% attendance rate and achievement of the Literacy and Numeracy co-requisite package.

Student Support and Pastoral Care

Botany Downs Secondary College provides the following named student support and pastoral care services:

• Whānau system: The college is organised into six Whānau groups, each comprising around 300 students across all year levels. Each Whānau is led by a Whānau Leader responsible for pastoral care, academic monitoring, and discipline. Whānau Mentors and Tutors serve as the primary contact point for families of junior students, reporting regularly on student progress. Siblings are placed in the same Whānau, and teachers remain associated with their students for the full five years of college.
• Guidance and Counselling: The counselling team, located in the Student Services building, comprises two Co-acting Heads of Counselling and two Counsellors. All are registered members of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors and operate under the NZAC Code of Ethics. They offer individual counselling and group programmes (primarily for Years 9 and 10), and can refer students to specialist agencies for acute mental health issues, addiction, or historical trauma. Students can self-refer or be referred by staff, peers, or parents.
• Student Services: Managed by Mrs Michelle Byers (ext. #473), Student Services handles day-to-day student welfare matters including late arrivals, early departures, and appointment sign-in and sign-out. Students who are unwell during the school day report to Student Services, where a nurse is available to see them.
• Attendance Officer: Mrs Michelle Glass (ext. #283) manages student attendance. The college uses a Stepped Attendance Response (STAR) plan to identify students with attendance difficulties and coordinate support. The school's stated target is to reach 73% regular attendance (defined by the Ministry of Education as attending more than 90% of the time per term) by the end of 2026.

Facilities

Botany Downs Secondary College opened in 2004, with three additional Whānau buildings opening in 2006. The campus is organised around six two-storey Whānau buildings, each containing specialist teaching rooms on the upper floor and, on the ground floor, five teaching classrooms, a staff workroom, a kitchen, student lockers, and a central Commons space used for breaks, before and after school, and weekly Whānau assemblies.
