About Somerville Intermediate School

Somerville Intermediate School is a New Zealand intermediate school serving students in the years before they transition to college. The school operates under the guiding phrase "the best you can be" and organises its culture around six stated values — Attitude, Service, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect, and Excellence — collectively referred to as ASPIRE.

The school is not faith-based or Māori-medium. Its stated character centres on a broad capability framework it calls the Somerville Learner Profile, which draws on research into the skills and dispositions considered necessary for long-term success, alongside academic knowledge.

A curriculum emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) is delivered through nine specialist teachers. The school also runs an Aspiring Centre, which provides Gifted and Talented Extension (GATE) programmes in mathematics (under the name Matrix), English, critical thinking, innovation, and ethics, as well as support for students needing additional help in English and mathematics. The school also caters for international students.

School donations

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".

With an Equity Index of 387, Somerville Intermediate School is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.

Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.

Enrolment

Somerville Intermediate School operates an enrolment scheme under Section 11 of the Education Act 1989, adopted by the School Board of Trustees. The scheme exists to avoid overcrowding and to support the efficient use of the school network. Enrolment for in-zone students is open; enrolment for out-of-zone students is closed.

In-Zone Eligibility

To qualify as an in-zone student, a student must reside within the school's home zone throughout the school term, including weekends. Rental arrangements used to establish in-zone residency must be for a minimum of one year. The Board may decline an application if it has reasonable grounds to believe the stated address will not be a genuine, ongoing living arrangement, and may annul an enrolment after it has begun if the student is found to no longer reside at the address given.

Required Documents

Applicants must upload two proof-of-residence documents when completing the online enrolment form. Accepted documents include:

  • A Sale and Purchase Agreement, if the purchase has been within the last three months
  • A current electricity or gas account in the parent or guardian's name showing the in-zone mailing address
  • A current Watercare account in the parent or guardian's name showing the in-zone mailing and supply address
  • A current internet or broadband account in the parent or guardian's name showing the in-zone mailing and supply address
  • A current Tenancy Agreement through a registered real estate agent or Tenancy Services, showing a 12-month fixed term (if using a Tenancy Services agreement, bond lodgement confirmation is also required)
