About Napier Central School
Napier Central School is a state primary school located on Napier Terrace in Napier, Hawke's Bay, serving students from Year 1 to Year 6. The school was founded in 1879, originally as Main School at the foot of Milton Road in Clive Square, with a roll of 179 pupils and 12 teachers.
The school's history includes two major destructions: a fire in 1916 and the Hawke's Bay Earthquake of 3 February 1931, which destroyed its brick buildings. The current buildings opened in July 1931 with a roll of 536 pupils. The school sits on elevated ground with views over Napier and across Hawke Bay to Mataupo Maui (Cape Kidnappers).
The school motto is "Lay well thy foundation". It is a non-faith-based, English-medium school. School hours run from 8.50am to 3.00pm. Uniform wearing is a condition of enrolment. The school accepts enrolments both within and outside its home zone.
Inter-house competition is organised across four named houses: Whero (Red), Kowhai (Yellow), Kakariki (Green), and Kahurangi (Blue), with major events including swimming, cross country, and athletics.
Enrolment
Enrolment scheme on recordNapier Central School has an enrolment scheme (a home zone) on record. Living inside it guarantees a place; living outside it does not, though out-of-zone applications may still be considered.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".
With an Equity Index of 403, Napier Central School is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Napier Central School actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Napier Central School's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 187 students (73.3%)
- Asian — 41 students (16.1%)
- Pacific — 5 students (2%)
- Māori — 26 students (10.2%)
- MELAA — 17 students (6.7%)
- Other — 1 students (0.4%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.
