About TKKM o Te Ara Hou
Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Hou is a Māori-medium school operating under the Te Aho Matua framework, the founding philosophical document of the kura kaupapa Māori movement. Instruction and school life are conducted through te reo Māori.
As a Te Aho Matua kura, the school is guided by six principles drawn from that framework:
- Te Ira Tangata — the worth of the person
- Te Reo — the Māori language as a living, valued possession
- Ngā Iwi — connection to iwi and the nurturing of future generations
- Te Ao — engagement with the wider world
- Āhuatanga Ako — approaches to learning and wellbeing
- Ngā Tino Uaratanga — core values and the pursuit of excellence
The school includes a Wharekura (secondary) section, with students from at least Years 7–8 through to senior secondary level. Kapa haka is a structured part of school life, with a dedicated group providing leadership and learning support in waiata and haka across the kura.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
With an Equity Index of 525, TKKM o Te Ara Hou is in the range eligible to opt into the Ministry's donations scheme — receiving additional government funding per student in exchange for not seeking donations (except for overnight camps).
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where TKKM o Te Ara Hou actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against TKKM o Te Ara Hou's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 6 students (2.5%)
- Asian — 1 students (0.4%)
- Pacific — 9 students (3.7%)
- Māori — 240 students (99.6%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.
