About Southbrook School
Southbrook School is a primary school located in the southeastern part of Rangiora, in the North Canterbury region of New Zealand.
The school's stated values are framed around three concepts — Mātauranga, Āhuatanga, Whanaungatanga (Knowledge, Character, Relationships) — represented in its 3-Kete logo. These three concepts underpin the school's stated mission and approach to teaching and learning.
The school's grounds include a 23-metre heated pool, adventure playgrounds, hard court areas, grassed areas, shaded garden areas, and plantings of native plants and trees. An on-site hall and gymnasium is used for indoor sports and cultural activities. The school also operates a radio station, broadcasting on school days from 8:30–9:00 am and 1:10–1:40 pm.
The school community includes a Board of Trustees and a parent group called ParentsLink. The principal is Julie Walls.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
With an Equity Index of 474, Southbrook School is in the range eligible to opt into the Ministry's donations scheme — receiving additional government funding per student in exchange for not seeking donations (except for overnight camps).
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Southbrook School actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Southbrook School's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 219 students (84.6%)
- Asian — 16 students (6.2%)
- Pacific — 6 students (2.3%)
- Māori — 36 students (13.9%)
- MELAA — 2 students (0.8%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Enrolment
Southbrook School operates a defined enrolment zone. Students living within the zone have the right to enrol upon application. Students living outside the zone must apply for an out-of-zone placement, which is subject to availability.
For new entrants, the school asks families to pre-enrol at least eight weeks before their child's fifth birthday. This allows the school to arrange a whānau meeting and two pre-start orientation visits.
The school runs two New Entrant intakes per term, in Week 1 and Week 6. Children starting in Term 1 or Term 2 begin as Year 1; those starting in Term 3 or Term 4 begin as Year 0. During the first week, new starters finish school at 2.00pm rather than the standard end time.
Enrolment packs are available from the school office. No specific required documents are listed in the published information.
