About West Eyreton School
West Eyreton School, also known by its Māori name Wai-a-Raki West Eyreton School, is a state primary school with a rural character. The school's stated values are framed around five qualities: Excellence, Effort, Example, Enterprise, and Empathy.
The school's 2026 Strategic Plan is organised around three goals — Inspire, Connect, and Engage — and references obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the National Education and Learning Priorities (NELPs). The plan was developed with input from students, staff, and the wider school community.
Within its teaching approach, the school uses a framework called WE HITS (West Eyreton High-Impact Teaching Strategies) and identifies multisensory methods as a focus for reading achievement.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
With an Equity Index of 438, West Eyreton School is in the range eligible to opt into the Ministry's donations scheme — receiving additional government funding per student in exchange for not seeking donations (except for overnight camps).
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where West Eyreton School actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against West Eyreton School's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 173 students (92.5%)
- Asian — 9 students (4.8%)
- Pacific — 8 students (4.3%)
- Māori — 14 students (7.5%)
- MELAA — 5 students (2.7%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Enrolment
West Eyreton School uses a defined home zone. All students living within the zone boundary are eligible to enrol. The boundary runs from the southern terminus of Carleton Road, north east along Carleton Road to South Eyre Road, south east to Steffens Road, north east to Oxford Road, east to Tram Road, south east to Browns Road, south west to North Eyre Road, west along the northern side of North Eyre Road to Browns Road, south west to Hetherton Road, south east to Two Chain Road, south west to its southern terminus, south to the Waimakariri River, west along the river to a point in line with the southern terminus of Carleton Road, and north back to that terminus. Addresses on both sides of boundary roads are considered in-zone unless otherwise specified.
Each year, in-zone applications for the following year are sought by a date published by public notice. This allows the board to determine how many places remain available for out-of-zone applicants.
Out-of-zone applications are processed in the following priority order:
- Siblings of current students
- Siblings of former students
- Children of former students
- Children of a board employee or board member
- All other applicants
If the number of out-of-zone applicants within any priority group exceeds the available places, a ballot is held. The board must give public notice of application deadlines and the likely number of out-of-zone places available before each pre-enrolment period.
