About Te Parito Kōwhai Russley School
Te Parito Kōwhai Russley School is a state primary school in Russley. In 2024, the school was gifted a dual name — Te Parito Kōwhai — a te reo Māori phrase referring to growth and rejuvenation from the centre of the kōwhai tree.
The school describes its student community as drawing from diverse cultural backgrounds. It is not a faith-based or Māori-medium school.
The school is structured into three learning stages:
- Te Kākano (Years 1–3), focused on play, exploration, and place-based curriculum
- Te Māhuri (Years 4–6), where students move between classes for different learning areas and develop independence
- Te Kōhure (Years 7–8), with an emphasis on student leadership and personal responsibility
The school's stated values and dual name reflect an orientation toward te ao Māori concepts alongside a culturally diverse school community.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".
With an Equity Index of 420, Te Parito Kōwhai Russley School is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Te Parito Kōwhai Russley School actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →

Where the number of applicants in any priority group exceeds available places, selection is by ballot. Out-of-zone applications are considered in the following order of priority:
- Second priority: siblings of current students
- Third priority: siblings of former students
- Fourth priority: children of board employees
- Fifth priority: all other applicants
Applicants claiming sibling priority may be required to provide proof of the sibling relationship. Enrolment application forms are available from the school or by emailing reception@russley.school.nz.
