About Taita Central School
Taita Central School is a contributing, part open-plan primary school located in a residential area of Taita, a suburb of Lower Hutt. The school opened on 16 October 1948, established to serve a rapidly growing community as state housing was built in the area following World War Two to accommodate returned servicemen and their families.
The school's current buildings date from 1979, after the original school was completely destroyed by fire on 21 February 1979 — an event described as the first total destruction by fire of a school under the New Zealand Education Board. Students were temporarily accommodated at several nearby schools while a replacement was built, reopening on 2 July 1979.
