About Wainuiomata High School

Curriculum and Subjects
Wainuiomata High School covers Years 9 to 13. The school year is divided into two semesters, with Semester 1 beginning in February and Semester 2 in late June.
Junior students (Years 9 and 10) follow integrated courses that combine two or more curriculum areas. Technology is used extensively, and all staff work with Microsoft 365 as a digital platform. A curriculum model introduced in 2019, called Curriculum 19 (C19), organises junior learning into two streams: Courses, which merge traditional subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Physical Education/Health into combined topic-based units, and My Personal Learning Day (MPLD).
Senior students (Years 11, 12 and 13) work towards NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) at Levels 1, 2, and 3. Level 3 is required for University Entrance, which also has a Literacy requirement. Senior courses are topic-centred and integrated while meeting New Zealand Curriculum requirements. Course selection booklets are available for each of the three NCEA levels. A dedicated Mathematics pathways guide is also available for senior students.
Student Support Services
Wainuiomata High School provides the following on-site student support services:
- Guidance Counselling: Two counsellors, Richard Knox and Maria Lloyd, both full members of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors (MNZAC), are available to meet with students. Counselling students on placement are also sometimes available. Appointments can be made by email, in person, or via an appointment slip in the Careers/Guidance area. - Social Work: Jaydeen Karawana works as a Social Worker within the school and is available to students alongside the guidance counselling team.
