About TKKM o Te Rito

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rito is a Māori-medium school located at 29 Te Rauparaha Street, Ōtaki. It operates under the principles of Te Aho Matua and Whakatupuranga Rua Mano, the foundational frameworks governing kura kaupapa Māori.

The school traces its origins to 1989, when a kōhanga reo seed group was established among local whānau. Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Rito opened in Ōtaki in 1991 and gained formal recognition under the Education Act in December of that year. A secondary stream, Te Wharekura o Te Rito, was established in 1996.

The school's name derives from the pā harakeke (flax bush): te rito is the new shoot at the centre of the plant, nurtured by the surrounding leaves. The school uses this image to describe the relationship between a child, their whānau, and the kura.

Te reo Māori is the language of instruction at all times. The school's stated values place particular weight on the role of Ngāti Raukawa te au ki te tonga in its governance and operations, alongside commitments to the marae as a home base, te reo as a taonga, and iwi self-determination.
