About Te Wananga O Raukawa

Te Wānanga o Raukawa is a tikanga Māori tertiary education provider based in Ōtaki, in the lower North Island of New Zealand. It was established in 1981 by the Raukawa Marae Trustees, beginning with two students. It was formally recognised as a wānanga in 1993, and as a non-Crown entity wānanga in 2024. As of 2025, it has 4,824 enrolled students.

The institution was founded under the principles of Whakatupuranga Rua Mano: Generation 2000, an iwi development strategy originating in 1975 that captured the health and wellbeing aspirations of the ART Confederation — comprising Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai, and Ngāti Raukawa ki te tonga. These three iwi are the founding iwi of the wānanga.

Programmes are delivered through a blended learning approach that combines distance learning, online courses, and residential stays in a Māori noho format, allowing students to study without daily on-campus attendance. Qualifications offered range from certificates through to master's degrees.

Qualifications Offered

Te Wānanga o Raukawa offers NZQA-recognised qualifications from certificate to master's level. All qualifications embed mātauranga Māori; most at diploma level and above include compulsory iwi and hapū studies and te reo Māori studies. Programmes are delivered through a blended model combining distance learning with residential noho seminars on campus in Ōtaki. All certificate-level qualifications (Poupou) are free to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.

Te Wānanga o Raukawa students can access the following named external scholarships and funding sources:

• Kia Ora Hauora Scholarships — for those wanting to enter the health sector, searchable via the Kia Ora Hauora Scholarships Database.
• New Zealand Federation of Graduate Women scholarships, grants and awards — for women pursuing further study, including national, regional and international awards and fellowships.
• Paranihi ki Waitotara scholarships and grants — open to undergraduate and postgraduate students who whakapapa to at least one of the eight iwi of Taranaki, are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents, are endorsed by a living PKW shareholder, and are enrolled in a recognised institution. Some scholarships are open to any field; others target agriculture, environment and conservation, science, and finance.
• New Horizons for Women Hine Kahukura — second-chance education awards for women returning to study at foundation certificate, diploma or degree levels; awards for research benefiting women and girls in New Zealand; and awards for study or projects with a specific purpose. Includes the Te Reo o te Hākui Award, sponsored by the O'Regan and Johnson whānau, for study in Te Reo Māori.
• Horticulture New Zealand Scholarship — for people undertaking undergraduate study in horticulture or related fields.
