About Whakarongo School
Whakarongo School is a New Zealand primary school catering for students in Years 0–8. It is not faith-based or Māori-medium.
The school's curriculum is organised around a framework it calls the Whakarongo Kid, which sits alongside Literacy and Mathematics as a foundation for all learning. The Whakarongo Kid concept is built on three dimensions: Innovators, Navigators, and Collaborators. The school describes its aim as developing students to be future-focused learners and citizens.
The wider curriculum is divided into two strands — STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) and HEArtSS (Health, Environmental Studies, The Arts and Social Sciences) — delivered through a conceptual, inquiry-based approach. In Years 0–3, the focus is on building foundational literacy and mathematics skills. In Years 4–8, learning is organised around a central "big idea" that integrates both strands.
The school uses Flexible Learning Environments (FLEs), in which students have a homeroom within a pod of three homerooms that operate collaboratively. This structure has been in place across the school since 2015.
From Year 5, students can participate in a school badge system that awards points across five categories: academic, sport, culture, service, and values. Students who accumulate sufficient points in each category become eligible for a silver badge and then a gold badge.
A School Council draws members from Years 5–8, with Year 8 students eligible to serve as House Leaders. From 2018, council members have also been able to participate in a peer mediation programme.
