About Clyde Quay School
Clyde Quay School is a full primary school located in Mount Victoria, Wellington, established in 1889. It was originally sited near Oriental Bay before relocating to its current address on Elizabeth Street.
The school enrols approximately 240 students from Years 0 to 8, with Year 8 students moving directly to secondary school rather than attending an intermediate. New entrant class sizes are kept below 15. The majority of students come from the Mount Victoria area, though the school community spans a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and more than 25 cultural groups.
Clyde Quay School is a secular state school. Its stated vision — developing creative thinkers who can overcome challenges and thrive in a diverse world — is expressed in both English and te reo Māori. The school's four values, framed in both languages, centre on self-worth, community contribution, respect for others, and active learning.
The school has 10–12 teaching staff, supported by up to 10 additional specialists and support staff. The principal is Cameron Ross.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".
With an Equity Index of 369, Clyde Quay School is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Clyde Quay School actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Clyde Quay School's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 111 students (49.3%)
- Asian — 101 students (44.9%)
- Pacific — 10 students (4.4%)
- Māori — 14 students (6.2%)
- MELAA — 15 students (6.7%)
- Other — 4 students (1.8%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Enrolment
Clyde Quay School is located in Mt Victoria, Wellington, and operates an Enrolment Scheme administered by the Board of Trustees. The scheme is intended to manage roll numbers and avoid overcrowding. In-zone residents are given priority, and the Board assesses available places for out-of-zone applicants each term. Where out-of-zone applications exceed available places, selection is by independent ballot. From 20 July 2026, an expanded enrolment zone takes effect, as directed by the Ministry of Education.
Children may begin school at age five. The school asks for advance notice of enrolment to assist with class planning and encourages prospective students to make several transition visits before their start date.
The following documents are required at enrolment:
- Birth certificate or passport
- Completed enrolment form
- Proof of address (for in-zone applicants)
- Most recent school report (for students transferring from another school)
Curriculum
Clyde Quay School's curriculum covers reading, writing, mathematics, sciences, information and communication technology, the arts, and physical education. The school also incorporates a Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) strand, with complexity increasing as students progress through the school.
All students receive instruction in te reo Māori. Year 7 and 8 students study French, introduced in 2003, and Mandarin, introduced in 2018. Chinese language classes are also available after school, delivered by external tutors in space provided by the school.
Support programmes include English as a second language, Reading Recovery, and writing and mathematics intervention. Enrichment programmes are also available. Students may participate in the Kiwi Competition examinations.
In the junior school, the Harakeke class (Year 0–1) uses the University of Canterbury's Better Start Literacy Approach for reading, endorsed by the Ministry of Education, and the University of Oxford's Numicon programme for numeracy.
