About Ngati Toa School

Ngāti Toa School is a primary school located at 44 Piko Street, Titahi Bay, Porirua.

The school takes its name from Ngāti Toa, the iwi whose rohe extends across Ōtaki, Wellington, the Hutt Valley, Marlborough, and Nelson. The name derives from Toarangatira, a grandson of the Waikato chief Tupahau, whose name was given in recognition of an act of chivalry: rather than killing a defeated enemy, Tupahau forgave him. The word toa reflects that quality of courageous and honourable conduct.

The school's account of how the name came about, written by Ngāti Toa chief Hohepa Wineera in December 1956, states that the name was chosen to reflect the shared interests of Māori and Pākehā families whose children are educated together at the school, and to connect the school to the history of the local district and iwi.
