About Redwood School (Tawa)

Redwood School is a primary school located in Tawa, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. Its strategic plan organises the school's direction around three areas: Culture, Curriculum, and Community.

School donations

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".

With an Equity Index of 377, Redwood School (Tawa) is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.

Enrolment

Redwood School operates an enrolment scheme with a defined home zone. Students living within the zone are entitled to enrol. Students living outside the zone may only enrol if vacancies exist, with out-of-zone applications processed by ballot when demand exceeds available places.

Home zone boundaries

The home zone has two parts, divided by the railway line. On the Redwood (west) side, the northern boundary includes addresses on Duval Grove, Peterhouse Street, Larsen Crescent, Mascot Street, odd numbers 31 to 37 The Drive, Kereru Bend, and Redwood Avenue. The southern boundary includes Middleton Road addresses numbered 400 and above, and all Richmond Hill Road addresses; Rowells Road addresses are not in zone. The Takapu Road side lies to the east of the railway line.

Out-of-zone priority order

Where out-of-zone places are available, applications are considered in the following order of priority:

  • Brothers and sisters of current students
  • Brothers and sisters of former students
  • Children of former students
  • Children of Board employees or Board members
  • All other students

If applicants within a priority group exceed available places, selection is made by ballot. The school currently has no vacancies for out-of-zone New Entrant students in priority category 6.

Required documents

All enrolment applications require a copy of the child's eligibility document — one of the following:

  • NZ Birth Certificate or NZ passport (NZ citizens)
  • Australian passport (Australian citizens)
  • NZ residency permit, or NZ student visa/permit and parental work permit (non-NZ citizens)

In-zone applicants must also provide proof of address, with two documents required from the following: a rates notice or other utility account, a rental or sales agreement, or a letter from a medical provider or other government agency. A copy of any Court Order documents must be included where applicable.

Documents can be scanned and emailed to [email protected], or brought to the school office in person. Enquiries can also be made by phone at (04) 232 7704 to arrange a visit.

Co-curricular Activities

One co-curricular activity is named in available school information:

  • Music lessons — optional instrumental or music lessons held on Fridays, taught by specialist teachers and funded by parents. Students are withdrawn from regular class time to attend.
