About Taumata School
Taumata School is a foundation school located in the Lakes and Pyes Pa community. It draws its students primarily from that area and describes itself as a central hub within the rohe.
The school has established connections with Ngāi Tamarawaho and Ngāti Ranginui, and acknowledges being situated on whenua with significant history. Its stated vision is "Empowered to Learn, Empowered for Life."
The school's curriculum approach centres on literacy and numeracy, a localised curriculum called Te Tai Whanake, and learning through play and experiential methods. The school also emphasises personalised learning across intellectual, cultural, social, emotional, and physical dimensions.
Learning environments at Taumata are designed around principles including inclusive design, heat and light conditions that reflect the natural environment, and a sense of student belonging — with flexible furniture and a mix of quiet, social, indoor, and outdoor spaces intended to accommodate different learning preferences.
School donations
The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations may be requested".
With an Equity Index of 415, Taumata School is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.
Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.
Equity Index
The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Taumata School actually sits, not just the number on its own.
The Equity Index estimates the socio-economic barriers students face, on average, and is used to inform government funding and support. It is not a measure of school quality or academic performance.
Higher values indicate a higher level of estimated socio-economic barriers; lower values indicate fewer. Learn how the Equity Index is calculated →
Student ethnicity
The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Taumata School's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.
- European — 442 students (66.1%)
- Asian — 198 students (29.6%)
- Pacific — 31 students (4.6%)
- Māori — 118 students (17.6%)
- MELAA — 13 students (1.9%)
- Other — 7 students (1%)
- International — 7 students (1%)
Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Enrolment
Children may start school between the ages of 5 and 6. Taumata School accepts new entrants at the start of Weeks One and Six of each term. The school recommends enrolling online at least six months before a child turns 5. After an online enrolment form is submitted, a staff member contacts the family to arrange a meeting and complete the process.
New entrants starting in Term 1
- A Learning Coach visits the child at their preschool during Term 4 of the prior year.
- Parent information sessions cover school readiness, play-based learning, the school's culture and values, brain rules, and child well-being.
New entrants starting in Terms 2–4
- A Learning Coach completes a preschool visit.
- Three transitional visits to Taumata School are arranged for the child. Parents are legally required to remain on site during these visits.
Transferring from another school
Families transferring from another school complete the online enrolment form, after which a staff member arranges a meeting to finalise enrolment. Once confirmed, a familiarisation visit is scheduled so the child can see their learning space and meet their Learning Coach.
No information about an enrolment zone, home zone boundaries, or priority criteria is provided in the school's published enrolment content.
