About Papa Taiao Earthcare

Papa Taiao Earthcare is a New Zealand organisation that delivers environmental and sustainability education programmes to secondary students (taiohi). It has been operating since 2012, growing out of work in the Education for Sustainability strand of the New Zealand curriculum.

The organisation originated when teacher Marty Taylor, working with a disengaged class, partnered with Richard Nahi from Puatahi Marae to design an alternative learning experience. The group undertook pest trapping to protect the Weweia, a nationally critically threatened bird, and built a traditional whare nikau using harvested tōtara and nīkau. The curriculum was co-created with students and integrated NCEA assessment; all students in that original class gained NCEA credits. Richard Nahi gifted the name Papa Taiao following those results; the word Earthcare was added by Taylor in recognition of Te Tiriti partnership.

The organisation offers two broad types of programmes: short courses of one to three days focused on specific practical skills such as fencing, beekeeping, or pest management, and longer courses structured around project-based, self-directed learning aimed at developing sustainability knowledge and enterprise skills.

Papa Taiao's stated mission is to enable young people to make a living through enterprise while regenerating the planet and its people. Its work is guided by three pou — Whakawhanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, and Poutama — representing relationships, the tending of mana, and the journey of challenge and reflection respectively.
