What these terms mean
- Cancellation of integration agreement
- A state-integrated school leaves the state-integrated system. It may carry on as an independent (private) school, so this is not always a closure.
- Definition / authority change
- The school's legal definition or governing authority changes, for example a change of proprietor or board status. The school usually stays open.
- Type change
- The school's year range changes, for example from Contributing to Full Primary.
- Effective date
- The date the Ministry records the change taking effect; it can be in the past or the future.
Source & methodology
Changes are based on the Ministry of Education's current "School closures, mergers and new schools" workbook. KuraData calculates the summary figures shown on this page (by year and by region) from that source data — they are not published by the Ministry in this form. Effective dates reflect the Ministry's own record and may include changes dated in the past or the future.
