About Golden Sands School

- Kowhai (Tiria) – named after Tiria, a Nga Potiki matriarch repatriated in 1867 after being taken prisoner following the fall of Te Tumu pa in 1836. She became a keeper of cultural knowledge and is recorded as having lived on Hoawe, one of several pa located on Te Rae o Papamoa.
- Whero (Komata) – named after Komata, also taken prisoner at the fall of Te Tumu pa in 1836 and repatriated in 1867, who became an influential Nga Potiki matriarch.
- Kakariki (Meihana) – named after Meihana, a tohunga whakairo (master carver) of the mid to late 19th century whose work includes several meeting houses; some pieces are held in the Tauranga Heritage Collection.
