About Summerland Primary

Summerland Primary School is a New Zealand primary school serving students in Years 1–6. The school is led by co-principals Barb Dysart and Blair Giles, supported by deputy principal Tash Lord.

The school describes a focus on strong values alongside academic outcomes. Mathematics is taught using the Maths — No Problem! programme, delivered through a whole-class Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI) approach. Rather than traditional homework sheets, the school uses a home learning model offering curriculum-connected challenges for all Year 1–6 students. Specialist art classes are available, with each syndicate rotating through a dedicated art room over the course of the year.

School donations

The Ministry of Education profile states that: "Donations should not be requested, unless for a school camp".

With an Equity Index of 394, Summerland Primary is below the 432 threshold newly required to opt into the donations scheme, though a school already receiving this funding from an earlier year may continue to do so. Outside the scheme, a school can still ask families for donations, but cannot compel or enforce payment.

Check directly with the school for current charges, contributions or other costs. Learn more on the donations scheme or fees and charges at school, both on education.govt.nz.

Equity Index

The Ministry publishes this figure as a bare number — KuraData shows it against the directory-wide average, so you can see where Summerland Primary actually sits, not just the number on its own.

Student ethnicity

The Ministry publishes this as a raw table — here it's visualised directly against Summerland Primary's own roll, so the shape of it is clear at a glance.

  • European — 183 students (28.7%)
  • Asian — 359 students (56.4%)
  • Pacific — 121 students (19%)
  • Māori — 80 students (12.6%)

Percentages may sum to more than 100% because students can identify with more than one ethnic group.

Enrolment

Summerland Primary is a zoned school and is currently accepting in-zone enrolments only. The school describes itself as very full, with no places available for out-of-zone students. The zone boundary runs from the corner of Swanson Road and Sturges Road, along Sturges Road to Hercules Drive, down to the bottom of Hercules and Xena Way, along Paremuka Stream to Chelmsley Road, across to 218 Metcalfe Road, along to the railway tracks, then to Waitemata Rugby Club and back along Swanson Road. Properties on the Summerland Primary side of each boundary road are considered in-zone.

Enrolment is completed online. For new entrants, the school advises contacting the office at least 10 weeks before a child's fifth birthday. For children with special needs, earlier contact is recommended — up to six months to a year in advance.

Before starting, new entrant children attend three morning visits to the reception classroom, currently held on Friday mornings from 8:55am to 11:00am. Parents are asked to arrive at the office by 8:45am. Enrolment paperwork is completed at the school office on the child's first day. The school office is open 8am to 3:30pm during term time. Enquiries about the new entrant process can be directed to Tash Lord, Deputy Principal.
